The bilateral relations between Belarus and Iran have reached the level of strategic partnership, said the Head of the Belarusian State, Alexander Lukashenko, at a meeting with the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on May 21.
The two Presidents held both closed-door talks and enlarged talks. A major focus during the talks was placed on the possibilities to boost the mutual goods turnover, to step up investments, and to broaden cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The parties exchanged views on international problems of current importance.
In view of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the strengthening of relations between Belarus and Iran helps maintain international security. “You are one of my best friends,” noted Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressing the President of Belarus. – We have neither obstacles nor barriers for interaction. We have an enormous potential for our long-term prospects and we must materialize that potential.”
In 2006, the goods turnover between both countries reached US$ 33.5 million. For our country, Iran is a promising and solvent partner because it possesses considerable oil and gas resources (about 10 and 18 percent of the world resources respectively). Iran has put in operation an assembly facility for MAZ heavy-duty trucks, while Belarus opened in August of 2006 an assembly facility for Iran’s Samand cars.
Alexander Lukashenko and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad signed a joint communiqué on the results of the visit by the President of Iran to Belarus.
In the presence of the presidents, the negotiating parties also signed the Agreement on cooperation between the National Bank of Belarus and the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Agreement between the National Bank of Belarus and the Central Bank of Iran on cooperation in training the banking staff, the Agreement on cooperation in education between the Ministry of Education of Belarus and the Ministry of Science, Research and Technologies of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The two leaders will continue their dialogue on May 22 during the visit to the National Library of Belarus. |
