An important initiative of the Republic of Belarus within the framework of the United Nations Organization was the proposal by the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, to set up a nuclear-weapon-free space in Central and Eastern Europe. This initiative was submitted for consideration of the world community at the 53rd session of the UN General Assembly, and in December 1998 the General Assembly adopted the respective resolution on regional disarmament (document 53/77).
In 2000, on Belarus’ initiative, the 55th session of the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 55/82 “ Measures to be taken against political platforms and activities based on doctrines of superiority which are based on racial discrimination or ethnic exclusiveness and xenophobia, including, in particular, neo-Nazism.”
In spring 2003, responding to challenges of the modern world and assessing the lessons from the Iraqi and Middle East crises, the delegation of the Republic of Belarus, jointly with the delegation of Cuba, initiated the draft resolution “Peace Consolidation as a Vital Requirement for Human Rights Fulfillment” at the 59th Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
At the 60th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly in September 2005, the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, launched international initiatives: he urged the international community to recognize the diversity of the ways of progressive development of countries and peoples in the world and to take efficient measures in the fight against human trafficking. |
