Interview by President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to the Russian NTV Channel Programme "Segodnya" (Today)09.09.2002

NTV: President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is on the air in our programme. How do you do, Alexander Grigoryevich.

A.G. Lukashenko: Good afternoon.

NTV: At present, Moscow has several variants of the Belarus-Russia unification: following the EU type of structure, incorporating Belarus into Russia, and further improvement of the existing Union Treaty. The first two variants, as the Kremlin repeatedly alluded, are regarded as preferable by Moscow. Which of the variants would suit you best? What is you vision of the problem and the solution to it?

A.G. Lukashenko: Speaking honestly and sincerely, and one cannot be insincere for it is not often that I have to communicate with such a wide audience of the Russian viewers, I would say you the following. Today, Moscow has none of the variants, which it would sincerely like to see fulfilled. Just take the first variant, diving Belarus into parts and merging them with the Russian Federation. I had already had my response: even Stalin didn't go as far as such a variant. Moscow is very well aware that this is an impassable variant. We do not even discuss it. Moscow does not want to discuss it either, although it persistently puts it forward in all its messages and proposals.

The second variant - following the EU type of structure. It would seem to be an elegant option. But they would keep one thing back in this variant. You see, in order to follow the path of the European union, the Russian leaders today suggest as a matter of fact to destroy, to denounce the existing Treaty. That is to say, the condition of following the EU type of structure implies another condition: "destroying the Treaty." We will never agree to it.
